Our Approach

At The Lodge, we believe that emotional safety, trust and connection are essential foundations for learning .

We provide calm, personalised learning experiences for young people aged 11 to 18 with SEND and SEMH needs who may struggle within traditional education environments.Â

Our approach is flexible, relationship led, and designed to reduce pressure while supporting confidence and meaningful engagement in learning.

Emotional Safety First
Many young people who attend The Lodge have experienced anxiety, emotional overwhelm, school avoidance or difficulties engaging within busy educational environments.
Larger classrooms, constant demands, noise and social pressure can leave some learners feeling dysregulated, exhausted or unable to engage safely in learning.Â
At the Lodge, sessions are delivered within a calm, low pressure environment where young people are supported to regulate at their own pace.Â
We understand that meaningful learning often begins with emotional safety, consistency and positive relationships.
Â
Why One to One  Learning Matters
Many young people benefit from learning within a smaller, low demand environment where relationships, communication and emotional regulation can be supported more consistently.
A personalised one to one approach allows sessions to be adapted in real time around the learner’s needs, interests, energy levels and emotional presentation.
Reduced noise, social pressure and unpredictability can help create an environment where young people feel safer, more regulated and more able to engage positively in learning,
This approach also allows stronger therapeutic relationships to develop over time, help building trust, confidence and meaningful participation .

Personalised Learning
Learning at The Lodge is tailored to the individual strengths, interests and emotional readiness of each young person.
We recognise that many learners engage more successfully through creative, practical and hands on experiences rather than traditional desk based approaches alone.Â
Enrichment activities including art, practical projects, sensory experiences, cooking, gardening and vocational learning opportunities are used to support communication, confidence, emotional regulation, problem solving and engagement with education.
Sessions remain flexible and learner centred, helping reduce pressure while encouraging curiosity, independence and positive participation.
Â
Designed Around The Learner
The Lodge has been designed to feel calm, welcoming and emotionally safe. Spaces are intentionally low demand and adapted to support sensory regulation, creativity and focused engagement.
Rather than replicating a traditional classroom environment, The Lodge aims to provide a more nurturing and flexible setting where young people can feel comfortable, respected and able to engage at their own pace.
Many young people thrive when the environment around them is adapted to better meet their individual needs, communication styles and sensory profiles.
We recognise that many neurodivergent young people are not struggling because they are unwilling to learn, but because their environment is not fully meeting their needs. Rather than expecting every learner to fit a single model, we adapt the environment, approach and activities to support the individual.
At The Lodge, we recognise that difficulties in learning are not always caused by the learner themselves, but can also arise when environments become overwhelming, inflexible or emotionally unsafe. Our aim is to provide calm, adaptable and supportive learning experience that reduce pressure and support meaningful engagementÂ
Â
Enrichment Through Meaningful Experiences
At The Lodge, we believe that learning extends beyond traditional academic subjects. Many young people engage most successfully when learning is connected to meaningful experiences, personal interests and opportunities for creativity.
Our enrichment opportunities are designed to support communication, confidence, emotional regulation, independence and engagement with learning. Activities may include art, sewing, gardening, cooking, sensory experiences, practical projects, life skills and learner led interests.
These experiences provide opportunities for young people to develop new skills, experience success and build positive relationships with learning. For some learners, enrichment activities act as a bridge back into education by reducing anxiety and creating opportunities for engagement that feel safe, achievable and enjoyable.
Enrichment is not viewed as separate from learning. Creative, practical and hands on experiences can support literacy, numeracy, emotional development and personal growth in ways that are meaningful to the individual learner
By recognising and nurturing each young person’s strengths and interests, we aim to create opportunities for curiosity, achievement and a renewed sense of confidence in their own abilities.
Â
Building Confidence & EngagementÂ

Our aim is to help the young people rebuild confidence in themselves, develop positive relationships with learning and experience success within a supportive environment.
For some learners this may support gradual re-engagement with education or improved attendance within their main setting.
For others, The Lodge provides a consistent space where they can continue developing emotionally, socially and academically at a pace that feels manageable and achievable.
Through personalised learning and enrichment opportunities, young people are encouraged to experience success, develop confidence and build positive relationships with learning.
Progress is recognised in many different ways, including communication, emotional regulation, participation, independence, resilience and self belief.Â

Partnership and support
The Lodge works closely with schools, families and other professionals to provide consistent, personalised support for each learner.
Learners remain on roll with their education setting and attend The Lodge as a part of a flexible part time arrangement.
We value collaborative working and aim to create a joined up approach that supports both the young person and the wider team around them.
Sessions at The Lodge are delivered on a flexible, part time basis and are designed to complement existing education arrangements.
The Lodge is not intended to replace school, but to provide additional personalised support within a calm and structure enviroment.
